Chapter One: Acceptance

In the midst of a darkened hallway lurked two figures. The taller of the two was bent over the other’s neck as they embraced. Their bodies moved fluidly together as if dancing to an unheard music. What seemed to be a woman’s voice could be heard moaning in pleasure as their bodies moved faster and harder together. I slammed my door shut. Another night of listening to whores outside my room was something I could do without. I went into the bathroom and turned on the hot water tap. Steam quickly filled the room and fogged the mirrors as I undressed for my bath. I went to the stereo attached to the wall and turned the radio tuner to 106.4, my favorite Broadway station. Wicked was playing on the air and the lead’s voice crooned the lyrics to “As Long As You’re Mine” into the bathroom. The seductive tune echoed off the walls and once again in my head. Infuriated, I punched the controls. The stereo system sizzled out and my anger subsided into defeat.

“Great. I suppose I’ll have to pay to have that fixed as well.”

Deciding against my bath I pulled the stopper and the shower head spurt forth streams of water onto my flesh. I quickly showered; grateful the sound of the water drowned out the sound of the lovers in the hall, and then grabbed a towel to dry off. While drying my hair I heard a knock at the door. Grabbing the complimentary robe that was really more of a gown that you would find in a doctor’s office, I wrapped myself in it, my hair in the towel, and went to answer the door. I peered through the peephole and found the attendant from the main desk. I opened the door a crack and poked my head out.

“Can I help you?”

“This came in the mail for you today Ma’am” he said.

I took the mailing envelope from him and thanked him closing the door behind me as I turned to open my mail. Inside the envelope was a packet along with a letter. The letter read:

Dear Miss Bloom,
The Critics’ Society of Broadway would like to welcome you into our company. Enclosed is a list of the latest hit shows along with a brochure and a ticket to each. As a representative of our company we expect you to watch the shows with the utmost concentration and attention to detail. After each show you have one week to submit your critique and evaluation of the show. Your evaluation will be in competition with others who have submitted their own evaluations and thus your paycheck will be based on your rate of publication. We would like to wish you the best of luck and we look forward to reading your reviews.
